| Reformed theologian, born in Winterthur, N Switzerland. Following service as a pastor (1916–24), he became professor of systematic and practical theology at Zürich (1924–55). The author of nearly 400 books and articles, his reputation outside the European mainland was established by the translations of The Mediator (1927) and The Divine Imperative (1932). |
