| Dutch economist and politician, born in Tijnje, N Netherlands. An active member of the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) from his student days in Delft, he was the first director of the SDAP's academic office in 1934, and entered the Upper House in 1937. After serving in the resistance he became minister of trade and industry (1945) setting up the Central Planning Office, and becoming minister of transport and waterways (1946–8). He was appointed director of the Centrale Algemene Verzekeringsmaatschappij and the Centrale Levensverzekeringsbank, both institutions associated with the socialist movement. He was a member of the Social Economic Council (SER), and as an adviser was instrumental in establishing welfare and social security institutions. After serving as a member of the Upper House (1956–68) he became a member of the Council of State, and was also an MEP. |
