| Physicist, born in Groningen, The Netherlands. He studied at Heidelberg and Groningen, and became professor of physics at Leyden. He was the first to produce liquid helium, and worked in low-temperature physics, discovering the phenomenon of superconductivity. He was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize for Physics. |
