| Consumer economist, born in Ashley, Ohio, USA. A University of Chicago PhD, she taught economics there (1925–52) and became a forceful advocate for consumer protection. She wrote the classic Theory of Consumption (1923) and contributed to the Bureau of Home Economics' Consumer Purchases Study (20 vols, 1938–41), which established a baseline for what became the Consumer Price Index. |
