| biography:
| Dancer, choreographer, and teacher, born in Colorado, USA. He read Greek at Harvard, studied at the School of American Ballet, and joined American Ballet (1935–7) and Ballet Caravan (1936–9). The first man to dance with the Martha Graham company, he created roles in many of her most famous dances until 1951, and married her in 1948 (divorced, 1954). He formed his own company in the mid-1950s, his mainly abstract dances reflecting his natural approach to movement. |
