| biography:
| Islamic leader and reformer, born in Mahmudiya, near Cairo, Egypt. In 1928 he founded the Society of Muslim Brothers (better known as the Muslim Brotherhood or Brethren) in Egypt, which preached a return to the purity of early Islam. In 1948 the Egyptian prime minister, Nuqrashi-Pasha, was killed by a Brotherhood member, and in 1949 Banna was himself assassinated by police agents, though he had condemned the murder. His movement has had considerable influence on contemporary Islamic fundamentalism. |
