| biography:
| Electrical engineer, co-inventor of the Decca radio-navigation system for ships and aircraft, born in Edwardsville, Illinois, USA. He studied at Washington University, St Louis, then worked for the General Electric Co, before the Brunswick Radio Corporation sent him to Britain in 1932 to design radios and radiograms for manufacture in the UK. During World War 2, working for Decca, he helped to develop a prototype radio-navigation system that was put into operation for the first time during the D-Day landings in 1944. |
