| Inventor and politician, born in Bath, SW England, UK, the son of the philosopher David Hartley. He was a fellow of Merton College, Oxford, and an MP (1774–84). With Benjamin Franklin, he drafted the Treaty of Paris between Britain and the USA in 1783 that ended the American War of Independence. His main claim to fame was his invention of a system of fire-proofing houses. |
