| biography:
| Physicist, born in Weymouth, Dorset, S England, UK. He studied at Oxford, then worked under Ernest Rutherford at Manchester University (1910–14). He worked on radioactivity, determining by means of X-ray spectra the atomic numbers of the elements (Moseley's law), the basis of 20th-c atomic and nuclear physics. He also predicted the unknown element hafnium. He was killed in action in Turkey at the age of 27. |
