| biography:
| Engineer and inventor, born in Hillsborough, Co Down, SE Northern Ireland, UK . He started his own garage business in Belfast at the age of 16, and built his own aeroplane, which made the first flight from Irish soil in 1909. Over many years he developed the Ferguson farm tractor, with a hydraulic linkage which controlled the depth of ploughing, and made the tractor itself more stable and efficient. These machines played a large part in the mechanization of British agriculture during and after World War 2. |
