| Physician and airman, born in DeSmet, South Dakota, USA. After serving a US Marine Corps enlistment, he attended college and medical school, obtained a medical degree, and practised industrial medicine in Minneapolis for several years. Commissioned in the Medical Reserve Corps (1929), he opted to specialize in the new field of aviation medicine. He was air surgeon, US 8th Air Force, in England during World War 2, and became surgeon general of the US Air Force in 1949. |
