| Radio engineer and inventor, born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, USA. He studied at the University of Iowa, then joined the RCA laboratories in 1928, his first invention being a directional microphone. In the late 1940s he carried out a series of tests which established the standards for high-fidelity sound reproduction, then in 1955 developed the first electronic music synthesizer with which Charles Wuorinen (1938– ) produced his composition Time's Encomium (1970, Pulitzer). He held over 100 US patents for acoustic devices and systems. |
