| Retail executive, born in Home Camp, Pennsylvania, USA. After 30 years with the S S Kresge company, he became president and chief executive officer (1959–72). In 1962 he opened the first Kmart discount store, and by 1990 the corporation, renamed Kmart Corp (1977), was the country's second largest retailer. He is credited with early recognizing and developing the potential of discount retailing. |
