| British stateswoman. She was educated at York University, became a solicitor, and was legal officer for the National Council of Civil Liberties (1978–82). She became a Labour MP in 1982, held shadow ministerial posts for social services (1984, 1985–7), health (1987–92, 1995–6), the Treasury (1992–4), employment (1994–5), and social security (1996–7), and became secretary of state for social security and minister for women (1997–8). She was appointed Solicitor General after the 2001 election. |
