| Finnish politician and prime minister (1987–91), born in Oripaa, SW Finland. He became politically active as a young man, and was secretary of the Youth League of the centrist National Coalition Party in 1959. He then served as the Party's information secretary (1962–4), research secretary (1964–5) and national secretary (1965–71). He was elected to Helsinki City Council in 1969, and to parliament (Eduskunta) in 1970. He did not stand for re-election when his term as prime minister ended. |
