| Advertising executive and government official, born in Los Angeles, California, USA. An executive with J Walter Thompson in Los Angeles (1949–69), he had served on Richard Nixon's campaigns since 1956. Campaign manager in 1968, he became Nixon's chief of staff (1969–73), and was dismissed by him as a ‘fall guy’ for stonewalling the Watergate investigation. Convicted of perjury (1975), he served a year in prison, publishing his version of the events in The Ends of Power (1978). He later began a career in commercial real estate. |
