| US naval officer, born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. Trained at the US Naval Academy, he served in a destroyer flotilla (1914–15). As chief of naval operations (1939–42), he was relieved after Pearl Harbor (1942), and became commander of US Naval Forces Europe (1942–3) with headquarters in London, where he made a great contribution to the success of Allied Operations in the European theatre. |
