| Political scientist and socialist, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and lectured at several US universities before joining the London School of Economics (1920), becoming professor of political science in 1926. He was chairman of the Labour Party (1945–6). His political philosophy was a modified Marxism which he expounded in his many books, including Authority in the Modern State (1919), A Grammar of Politics (1925), and The American Presidency (1940). |
