| biography:
| King of Denmark from c.940. The son of Gorm the Old and father of Sweyn Forkbeard, he was the first king to unify all the provinces of Denmark under a single crown. He was converted to Christianity in c.960, made Christianity the state religion of Denmark, and made his parents' burial mound at Jelling the site of a Christian church. He strengthened the unity and central administration of the country, and repelled attacks from Norway and the German states, bringing most of Norway under his control. He was eventually deposed in c.985 by his son, Sweyn, and died in exile soon afterwards. |
