| Australian politician and prime minister (1966–7), born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. He studied law at Melbourne University, joined the United Australia Party, which was to be replaced by the Liberal Party of Australia, and entered the House of Representatives in 1935. He became deputy leader of his Party in 1956, and leader and prime minister when Robert Menzies retired in 1966. During the Vietnam War he strongly supported the USA with the slogan ‘all the way with LBJ’. He died in office while swimming at Portsea, near Melbourne. |
