| Athenian tyrannicide, who with Aristogeiton in 514 BC killed Hipparchus, patron of the arts and younger brother of the ‘tyrant’ Hippias, during the Panathenaic festival. They meant to kill Hippias also (because of the brothers' personal vices), but Harmodius was cut down, and Aristogeiton, who fled, was taken and executed. They were made heroes of Athens after the expulsion, in 510 BC, of Hippias. Two public statues were erected and coins were struck with their image. |
