| biography:
| King of Denmark (1035–42), and the last Danish King of England (1040–2), the only son of Canute and Emma of Normandy. Canute had intended that Hardicanute should succeed him in both Denmark and England simultaneously, but he was unable to secure his English inheritance until his stepbrother, Harold I, died in 1040. Hardicanute's death without children led to the restoration of the Old English royal line in the person of Edward the Confessor, the only surviving son of Emma and Ethelred the Unready. |
