| Catholic theologian, born in Lucerne, C Switzerland. The author of some 60 books on theology, philosophy, and spirituality, he drew considerable inspiration for his theology from the religious experiences of the mystic Adrienne von Speyr (1902–67), with whom he formed a secular institute after leaving the Jesuits.
