| biography:
| Writer, born in Husum, N Germany. He trained as a lawyer, wrote a volume of poems (1857), and became known for his novellas, notably Der Schimmelreiter (1888, The Rider on the White Horse). His idea was that literature should stem from true emotion; much of his work is therefore nostalgically lyrical. |
