| Embryologist, born in Stuttgart, SW Germany. He studied in Stuttgart and Heidelberg, was professor at Rostock (1908–14), director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Biology in Berlin (1914–19), and professor at Freiburg (1919–35). He worked on embryonic development, discovering the function of certain tissues, and received the 1935 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. |
