| Historian, born in Kassel, C Germany. Professor in Königsberg, Prussia (1926–34) he was dismissed for racial reasons and emigrated in 1938. He became a research fellow in Oxford (1939–40), and a professor in Providence, Rhode Island (1940–5) and in Chicago (1945). In 1951 he returned to Germany and took a professorship in Tübingen. He specialist subjects were Bismarck, the nationality question, opposition to Hitler, and contemporary history. |
