| German politician and prime minister (1989–91), born in Jasenitz bei Stettin, Poland (formerly Prussia). An economist, he joined the Sozialistiche Einheitspartei (SED) in 1949, served on its Central Committee (1971–89), and became secretary of the SED Dresden area. In 1989 he began a dialogue with opposition groups, and as prime minister attempted a revival of the German Democratic Republic by means of round-table talks with other socialist partners. He became a member of the Vorstand (1989), and from 1990 was honorary chairman of the Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus (PDS) and a member of the Bundesrat. |
