| biography:
| Writer, born in Berlin, Germany. He abandoned his legal training to become director of a Berlin theatre. After a period of imprisonment he emigrated and lived in exile (1936–50). His early work shows him to be an exponent of Expressionism, and later he wrote effective plays based on contemporary political themes, including the internationally successful Wer weint um Juckenack? (1924), Die Affäre Dreyfus (1929), and Wasser für Canitoga (1932). He also wrote novels, radio plays, and scripts. |
