| Artist, born in Leipzig, EC Germany. He studied in Basel, Leipzig, Dresden, and Munich. Although in his earlier years he was influenced by the German Impressionists and Expressionists, from 1928 onwards he produced mainly abstract work. During World War 2 he served in the Foreign Legion, and gained French citizenship in 1945. His later paintings, which have made him one of the most famous French abstract painters, show a free calligraphy allied to that of Chinese brushwork. |
