| biography:
| Poet, born in Paramaribo, Suriname. He grew up in The Netherlands where he studied psychology. In 1968 he published Gedichten (Poems) followed by Gedichten 2 (1972, Poems 2). Both collections consist of short, fragmented poems. His later work is considered more accessible, mainly due to the fact that the syntax is more traditional in nature and the poetry is written in the first person. Shortly before his death he wrote Het ontbrokene (1990, The Absent) which describes the writer's struggle against death. This work is regarded as a touching climax to his successful oeuvre of poetry, for which he was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs in 1990. |
