| Missionary, born in Norway. He was a pastor in the Lofoten Is (1707–17), and in 1721 founded the first mission in Greenland. He then returned to Copenhagen, where he founded a seminary for training missionaries to Greenland and was appointed bishop (1740). He published the first book written in the Eskimo language (1742). |
