| Meteorologist, born in Kassel, Germany. His father, art historian Erwin Panofsky, brought the family to the USA in 1934. As a professor at Pennsylvania State University (1951–82), he won two of the highest honours from the American Meteorological Society, namely the Meisinger Award (1965) and the Rossby Medal (1976). A prolific writer, he advanced the understanding of clear-air turbulence and the dispersion of air pollutants. |
