| German politician. He was successor to Schmidt as leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), and the Party's nominee for the chancellorship of West Germany in 1983. A former minister of housing and town planning (1972–4) and minister of justice (1974–81), he also served briefly as governing Mayor of West Berlin (1981). He replaced Brandt to become SPD chairman (1987–91). |
