| biography:
| Show jumper, born in Wuppertal-Barmen, W Germany. He is the only man to have won five Olympic gold medals at show jumping: the team golds in 1956, 1960, 1964, and 1972, and the individual title on Halla in 1956. On the same horse he won the individual world title in 1954 and 1955. He made his international debut in Spain in 1952, and later became (West German) team captain. |
