| Chemical engineer, born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. In 1890 he developed a method of producing sodium by electrolysis of molten caustic soda, which was used in making aluminum, a method rendered obsolete by another's invention. Later he developed a cell for making high-purity caustic soda, which proved important in aluminum production. |
