| Carthaginian statesman and general at the time of the First Punic War, the father of Hannibal. Following Carthage's defeat in 241 BC, and the loss of her empire in Sicily and Sardinia to Rome, he set about founding a new Carthaginian empire in Spain. Between 237 BC and his death, he conquered most of the S and E of the peninsula. |
