| biography:
| Novelist, born in Reykjavík, Iceland. He travelled in Europe and the USA after World War 1, and became a Catholic before going to Canada and the USA (1927–30), where he was converted to Socialism. His major works include Salka Valka (1934), a story of Icelandic fishing folk, and the epic Sjálfstaet Folk (1934–5, Independent People). He also wrote a number of plays, and adapted some of his own novels for the stage. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955. |
