| Footballer, born in Sakarya, Turkey. He first played for his local side, Sakaryaspor, aged 16, and was soon snapped up by Bursaspor. He then enjoyed a number of successful years (1992–5) with Galatasaray, where he scored 38 times in a single season, setting a new European record. Moving to Italian club Torino, he did not settle well in Serie A and returned to Galatasaray, where he was rewarded with a UEFA Cup winners' medal in May 2000. He signed for Inter Milan for the 2000–1 season. A popular and key player for Turkey, in 2002 his country competed in only their second FIFA World Cup finals, their first since 1954. Following a short spell with Italian club Parma (2002), he joined England's Blackburn Rovers for the 2002–3 season, but unfortunately broke a leg during training soon after keeping him out of the game for several months. |
