| Historian, born in Berlin, Germany. He taught in Germany until he emigrated to the USA and joined the Yale University faculty (1934–69). Respected as an authority on the Reformation and the Weimar Republic, he served the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in Washington (1943–5) and in the State Department (1946–8). His History of Modern Germany (3 vols, 1968) covered Germany from the Middle Ages to the fall of Hitler. |
