| Pope (772–95), born in Rome, Latium, Italy. A deacon, he succeeded Stephen III as pope. He asked Charlemagne for help against the Lombards, who were then defeated at Pavia. From him he obtained confirmation of donations previously made to the Church, and these territories (Orvieto, Soana, Viterbo) were called the Patrimony of St Peter. He encouraged the reform of the Frankish Church and condemned the Iconoclasts during the 2nd council of Nicaea (787). |
