| biography:
| US general, born in Trenton, New Jersey, USA. He trained at Valley Forge and West Point, after which he studied guided-missile engineering at the University of Southern California. He served in Vietnam, was promoted to general (1983), and made commander-in-chief of the US Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida (1988). He is remembered for his role as commander of the Allied forces that liberated Kuwait from the Iraqi occupation led by Saddam Hussein in August, 1990. In ‘Operation Desert Storm’, Schwarzkopf distinguished himself as a brilliant strategist, and was noted for his expertise in handling press briefings. He retired from active duty in 1991 and began writing his autobiography. |
