| Scholar and writer, born in New Tredegar, Monmouthshire, S Wales, UK. He studied at the University of Wales, and was a schoolmaster and lecturer before becoming professor of English language and literature at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth (1940–64). His works on Norse history and literature include The Norse Atlantic Saga (1964), A History of the Vikings (1968), and various translations. His Welsh studies include a translation of the Mabinogion (1948), Welsh Legends and Folk-Tales (1955), and editions of Welsh Short Stories (1956) and The Oxford Book of Welsh Verse in English (1977). He also published several novels and collections of short stories. |
