| Political scientist, born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. A Harvard PhD, she was naturalized in the early 1940s and taught at Smith College (1943–64), Northwestern University (1964–74), and Indiana University (1974–84). After 1948 she focused on Africa, particularly on apartheid, and among her books are The Politics of Inequality (1958, later revised) and Which Way is South Africa Going? (1980). |
