| French crusader. He became King of Jerusalem in 1186 as consort of Sibylla, the daughter of Amalric I, but was defeated and captured at Hattin (1187) by Saladin, who overran most of the kingdom. On the death of his wife in 1190, he fought with Conrad of Montferrat for the throne. He ceded the throne to Richard I of England in 1192, and in exchange received Cyprus, where his family ruled until 1474. |
