| Belgian prime minister (1999– ), born in Termonde, Belgium. Educated at Gand, he practised law before serving in a variety of roles within the PVV (Partji voor Vrijheid en Vooruitgang), including the party presidency twice (1982, 1989). He was elected first as deputy, and served as minister of the budget and deputy prime minister (1985–8), then as a senator, where he became the vice-president of the senate (1995). |
