| biography:
| Composer, born in Guingamp, NW France. He studied law while also learning the bugle, the horn, and the double base. At the Conservatoire he left Massenet for Franck. He became director of the Conservatoire at Nancy (1919–29) and at Strasbourg (1929–49), then retired to Brittany where he found inspiration to continue his work. Among his compositions are the opera Le Pays (1908–10), melodies, five symphonies, the ballet L'Indiscret (1931), Masses, chamber music, and sonatas. In 1949 he succeeded Reynaldo Hahn at the Institut. |
