| biography:
| Liberation theologian and priest, born in Lima, Peru. He studied at Louvain (1951–5) and Lyon (1955–9), before ordination in Lima, becoming professor of theology at the Catholic university there in 1960. His theology is based on responding to the needs of the poor and oppressed rather than on imposing solutions from the outside. This has challenged supporters of the status quo in Latin America and practitioners of academic theology elsewhere. He has written several books, including A Theology of Liberation (1971), The Power of the Poor in History (1984), We Drink from Our Own Wells (1984), and On Job (1987). |
