| Painter, born in Paris, France. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was appointed professor of painting in 1892. He was an eccentric Symbolist who painted colourful but usually rather sinister scenes from ancient mythology and the Bible, as in ‘Salome’ (1876). |
