| Poet, literary theorist, and self-proclaimed inventor of ‘vers libre’, born in Metz, NE France. Returning to Paris after four years in North Africa, he collaborated on a number of literary reviews. He advocated abandoning the alexandrine line and making rhythm match the poets' thought movements. His poems include Les Palais nomades (1887), Domaine de fée (1895), and Premiers poèmes (1897). He also wrote a book on French poetry, Symbolistes et décadents (1902). |
