| Writer and art critic, born in Paris, France. A highly respected commentator on the arts, he became a strong advocate of Impressionism after a chance meeting with Claude Monet in Brittany in 1886. He subsequently wrote La Vie Artistique (1892–1903) a comprehensive history of Impressionism, and Claude Monet, sa vie, son temps, son oeuvre (1928). He was director of the Gobelins factory and one of the first members of the Académie des Goncourt. |
